It was nearly 2 pm when Lin and Leonard finally stopped for lunch. They pulled the truck to the side of the road near a small park and sat at a picnic table. The sun had broken through the clouds and it felt good to feel the warm rays on their faces.

Lin put out some water and a bowl of kibble for Nicky before opening her thermos of veggie soup and unwrapping her hummus, cheese, and tomato sandwich. Leonard had a thermos of beef stew and a piece of chunky bread.

“That smells good.”

“You want some?” Leonard held out his thermos.

“No, thanks. Did Heather make it?”

“Nope. It’s my recipe. I made some for her, too.”

“Are you going to move in together one of these days?”

Leonard sighed. “Don’t start nagging me, Coffin.”

“I’m not nagging. I want you to be happy.”

“I’m happy when you’re not nagging me.” The man bit into his bread. “I like Heather and she likes me. We enjoy each other’s company. But, I’m in no hurry to marry again.” He looked off at the trees. “I still miss Marguerite.”

Lin gave her friend a kind smile. “I understand.”

He used his spoon to stir the stew. “I don’t know if I’ll ever stop missing her.”

“I know,” Lin said softly.

“That’s it? You not going to run down a list of all the reasons why I should move on and get married again?”

Lin gave him a sly smile. “I could if you’d like to hear the many benefits of marriage.”

“Save it for another day,” the man grumped.

“You let me know when you’re ready to hear them.” Lin bit into her sandwich.

“Yeah. Okay.”

“I’m honestly happy that you and Heather are together. You’re a nice match.”

“We are a nice match. She makes me happy, and I think I do the same for her. Since you don’t mind prying into my life, I’ll ask you a question now. When are you going to have kids, Coffin?”

Lin made a face at her partner, but couldn’t help but laugh. “Okay, okay. I get your point.”

“Don’t wait too long. You’re no spring chicken, you know,” Leonard teased.

“You just want me to have a son so I’ll name him after you.”

“I never thought of that. It’s not a bad idea.” Leonard took another spoonful of the stew. “But that will have to wait. There’s a daughter waiting to be born.”

Lin smiled. “You’re so sure about that, huh?”

“I told you that a couple of years ago.”

“We’ll see.”

“Indeed, we will.”

The two ate in silence for a few minutes.

“Oh, I almost forgot.” Leonard reached into a pocket and removed a small piece of folded paper. “I looked through my books last night. This is the name of the pirate I remembered reading about who had red hair.”

Lin unfolded the paper. “Henry Jacobs, also known as the Copper Crow.” A flutter of cool air slipped over her skin when she read the name. She looked over at Leonard. “You think this is my ghost?”

“He was a redhead and he lived at the same time as La Buse.
